Sequim Public Works BuildingThe Public Works Department provides many of the important services that citizens receive from their government. The primary functions of the Public Works Department include: water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, street maintenance, landscaping, parks construction and maintenance, building maintenance, and vehicle maintenance. The Department also plays a major role in the planning for the City's future.

The Sequim Public Works Department provides services to residents, businesses, and various City departments such as Planning, Clerk/Treasurer, Billing, City Council and others. The Public Works Department also works with state agencies in grant applications, state mandated reports, construction reports, financing, etc.

The Public Works Department is currently the largest department in terms of both personnel and expenditures. The Department employs 20 people and its budget totals approximately $16 million. The budgets utilized by the Department include those from the current expense fund, those of a special nature for streets, parks and trails, and those of a proprietary nature as, for example, the water, sewer and solid waste funds. In the future, these funds will also include storm water and reuse water facility funds.

The Public Works Department will:

  1. Continue to create a safe environment for the citizens of Sequim while improving conditions in the city. We will also provide better living, shopping and tourism in the City;
  2. Continue to participate in regional planning efforts dealing with regional transportation, water supply, groundwater protection, fish habitat, and much more;
  3. Continue to participate in the education of environmental concerns;
  4. Continue to enhance communications and working relationships with other City departments and elected officials to better serve the needs of the citizens;
  5. Provide continued support to elected officials to better allow them to make good informed decisions;
  6. Continue to pursue funding for various projects and programs from outside funding sources such as grants, low interest loans, public/private partnerships.
